Gary Hall Attacked by Black Tip Reef Shark

According to reports, Olympic gold medalist Gary Hall, Jr., and his sister, Bebe Hall, were attacked by a 6-foot black tip reef shark while they were spear-fishing yesterday off the Florida Keys. Bebe was reportedly bitten and slashed by the shark, suffering a 3-inch gash, two rows of slashes and a puncture wound that required 19 stitches.

The Hall siblings were out diving and spear fishing when Gary speared a large snapper. Soon after, Bebe spotted a large reef shark, which prompted their decision to head back to their boat. En route to the boat, Gary held the snapper out of the water while kicking on his back, while Bebe kept an eye on the shark as it moved towards them.

After feeling a bump on her shoulder, Bebe realized a second, larger, shark had been attracted to the two swimmers. Bebe shot the shark with her spear gun, as it turned, mouth open, towards her. After Bebe removed the spear from the shark’s throat, it swam away as Gary and Bebe reached the safety of their boat, but not without injuries. Bebe was injured in the attack, but she will make a full recovery.
